Grief: A Journey Without a Map

Grief is one of the most personal experiences we can go through. It doesn’t follow a straight path, and it certainly doesn’t run on a schedule. Yet, so many people find themselves asking, “Shouldn’t I be over this by now?” or “Why does it still hurt so much?”

The truth is, there’s no ‘right’ way to grieve. Loss changes us, and the love we carry doesn’t disappear just because time has passed.

Letting Go of the ‘Rules’ Around Grief

You may have heard of the five stages of grief—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. But what no one tells you is that these stages aren’t a checklist. You might move through them, revisit them, or experience them all at once. Grief isn’t neat, and it doesn’t come with an instruction manual.

And yet, society often places unspoken expectations on us—subtle messages that we should ‘move on’ or ‘find closure.’ But grief isn’t about moving on. It’s about learning to live alongside your loss in a way that feels manageable for you.

Giving Yourself Permission to Grieve

If you’re wondering why you’re still grieving, consider this: grief is a reflection of love. It can represent deep bonds, unresolved feelings, or dreams left unfulfilled. It’s okay if it still hurts. It’s okay if certain days are harder than others.

Healing doesn’t mean forgetting. It means learning how to carry your loss while still allowing yourself to live.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

If you’re struggling to navigate your grief, you don’t have to carry it all by yourself. Talking can help—whether it’s with a trusted friend, a support group, or a counsellor who understands.
