Support for Neurodiverse Clients
At Skyla Counselling, I recognise that counselling can feel very different depending on how you experience the world. If you are neurodiverse — including autistic, ADHD, dyslexic or otherwise identify as neurodivergent — you may have sensory, communication, or routine needs that deserve to be understood and respected.
My aim is to offer counselling that feels accessible, collaborative, and supportive, where you have choice and control over how we work together. Adjustments are part of creating an environment where you can focus on yourself, and the work you want to do.
What You Can Expect
Counselling with me is not about trying to “fit in” or change who you are. It is about understanding yourself more fully and working in ways that feel manageable, predictable, and supportive.
I am happy to make reasonable adjustments to both the counselling space and the way we work to help you feel more at ease. Adjustments can be discussed at any point, before starting counselling or as we go along.
Environment & Sensory Considerations
Where possible, I can offer:
Quiet, private counselling room with minimal background noise
Soft, neutral lighting
Comfortable seating, with the option to sit on the floor if that feels better for you
A calm environment with limited visual clutter
The option to bring or use weighted blankets, White noise machines to help reduce external sounds, fidget toys, bean bags, or comfort items from your own home
I understand that sensory needs can change day to day, and we can review what feels helpful as we work together.
How We Can Work Together
Counselling can be adapted in ways that support clarity, predictability, and emotional safety, including:
Clear structure around sessions, including start and end times
A slower pace when needed, without losing focus or direction
Time to process thoughts before responding
Written information or summaries if helpful
Flexibility to take breaks during sessions
Direct, clear communication without pressure to “perform” or explain yourself
You are always in control of what we explore and how we work.
Booking, Arrival & Practical Support
To reduce uncertainty and help you feel prepared, I will provide:
Clear directions and information about accessing the practice
A comfortable and private waiting area
Online or telephone counselling as an alternative to face-to-face sessions
The option to discuss any concerns about arrival, timing, or the environment in advance
Reasonable Adjustments Form
You are welcome to complete a Reasonable Adjustments form before your first session to let me know what might support you best. This helps ensure that your needs are understood from the outset, without having to explain everything verbally if that feels difficult.
Adjustments are not fixed — we can revisit and adapt them as we go.
A Final Note
If you are neurodiverse, it can take courage to reach out, especially if past experiences of support or therapy have felt mismatched or overwhelming. You deserve counselling that works with you, not against you.
If you would like to ask questions or talk through what might help you feel more comfortable, you are very welcome to get in touch.
