What is Love Bombing?

Love bombing might sound romantic at first – all that attention, affection, and praise can feel like a dream come true. But when it’s used as a manipulative tactic, it can quickly become overwhelming and confusing leading to relationship anxiety and low self esteem.

Love bombing is when someone showers you with excessive affection or admiration. This creates dependency on that person, and gives them the control.

At first, it can feel flattering, euphoric even, but often the intensity fades, leaving you doubting yourself and feeling emotionally unsettled.

Not Just in Romantic Relationships

Although it’s often spoken about in the context of dating, love bombing can show up in many areas of life.

  • A new friend may rush closeness.

  • A family member might use gifts or constant praise to keep you tied to them.

  • Even in the workplace, a manager or colleague could use flattery or opportunities to create a sense of obligation.

Wherever it appears, the effect is the same: you may feel pressured, manipulated, or you may have doubts about your own thoughts and beliefs.

Signs to Look Out For

Excessive compliments – praise that feels over the top or too much, too soon.
Rapid commitment – talk of love, loyalty, or a shared future very quickly.
Isolation – discouraging you from spending time with others.
Overwhelming gifts or gestures – leaving you feeling indebted.
Constant communication – little space to pause or reflect.

What Can Help

💭 Reflect – notice whether the relationship feels balanced and respectful of you and the other person.
🛑 Set boundaries – it’s okay to slow things down or make space for yourself and your needs.
🤝 Talk it through – share your concerns with trusted friends or family.
🌱 Seek support – counselling can help you make sense of the experience and rebuild your confidence.

Remember

Healthy relationships – whether romantic, platonic, family, or professional – should leave you feeling safe, valued, and free to be yourself, not overwhelmed or controlled.
