Face to Face or Online Therapy?

When deciding whether to work face-to-face or online with a counsellor, there are a few things to consider.

What is Face-to-Face Counselling?

Face-to-face counselling is where we meet in person, sitting together in a room to talk. It allows us to build a relationship by sharing the same space. This has been the traditional way counselling was conducted until advances in technology made online counselling an alternative.

How it Works

You will come to my confidential and safe practice room at The Reflection Rooms on Barton Street in Tewkesbury, usually at the same time each week. During our sessions, we will talk about whatever is difficult or troubling you. Being in the same room allows us to see each other, hear each other’s tone of voice, and observe hand gestures and facial expressions. These non-verbal cues can be helpful when words are hard to find. Sessions are 50 minutes in length.

Benefits of Face-to-Face Counselling

  • Easier to build a relationship: In-person meetings often make it easier to establish trust and connection compared to virtual sessions.

  • Non-verbal communication: Sharing the same space allows us to understand each other better through body language, facial expressions, and tone.

  • Separation from home life: Coming to a neutral, safe space may help you open up more easily and feel more focused during our sessions.

  • No distractions or interruptions: In my practice room, there will be no distractions, allowing for undisturbed sessions.

  • No technical difficulties: Unlike online counselling, face-to-face sessions don’t require setup or technology concerns.

Things to Consider

  • Would you prefer the convenience of online sessions?

  • Are you able to come to my practice room every week

What is Online counselling?

Online counselling allows you to engage in therapy using internet technology, such as Zoom, instead of meeting in person. This virtual format helps us connect and build our therapeutic relationship online. By seeing me through a webcam, you'll gain many of the benefits of face-to-face counselling, but with the added convenience of online therapy. If you choose online counselling, I will guide you through the process, and we’ll meet at our agreed time each week.

How it Works

Before we start, I will assess if online counselling is a good fit for you through a simple questionnaire. If it’s a match, I will walk you through everything you need to know before our first session. Sessions will typically take place at the same day and time each week. On the day of the session, I will send you a one-click link via email. At the scheduled time, you’ll click the link to join me in our virtual room. Sessions are 50 minutes in length.

Benefits of Online Counselling

  • Convenience: Receive counselling from the comfort of your own home, at a time that works best for you.

  • No Travel Required: Online counselling eliminates the need for travel, saving you time and effort.

  • Confidential & Secure: We use secure software to ensure confidentiality and provide peace of mind.

  • Privacy: You won’t have to worry about being seen entering a practice room.

Things to Consider

  • Are you comfortable using internet technology?

  • Would you prefer face-to-face counselling?

  • Do you feel you can express your feelings well through words?

  • Do you feel your situation is too complex to discuss online?

  • Do you have access to a private laptop or other internet-connected device?

  • Do you have a quiet space in your home where you won’t be overheard or interrupted?

  • How do you feel about seeing yourself on screen?

  • If you choose not to use your camera, there will be no non-verbal cues (such as body language) for either of us to read, which could lead to misunderstandings.
